Attention cross-country skiing fans: 60 varied trails await you around St. Johann im Pongau – including highlights such as the high-altitude trail on the Obergaßalm, where you can see the peaks of the Pongau mountains at an altitude of 1,600 m. Or how about the 50 km long Tauern trail? It connects the Ski amadé resorts and mixes sport with sightseeing. You can also start on three perfectly groomed trails directly in St. Johann – part of a gigantic 220 km long trail network. Ready to leave your mark in the snow?
There are 167 varied ski tours waiting for you in the St. Johann im Pongau region. Many start in the neighboring Grossarltal, also known as the “valley of the alpine pastures.” But there are also exciting routes directly from Alpendorf – for example the Hahnbaum route, perfect for warming up.
With or without snowshoes – the Alpendorf St. Johann is your paradise, regardless of whether you are a beginner or an experienced hiker. Snowshoes, hiking poles and sledges are usually available for free. Guided tours? Check out our weekly program!
There are 17 easy to medium-difficulty toboggan runs waiting for you in the region. Some of them even take you up the mountain with the lift, so you can enjoy the special downhill fun several times over. You can easily rent a toboggan from us. To get started, we recommend our “home runs”: the natural toboggan runs at Hahnbaum and in Alpendorf.
Of course you can also go ice skating with us – or rather ice skating! In the middle of St. Johann, very close to the harbor, there is an open-air artificial ice rink. You can do your laps there every day from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. – even when it’s milder outside. You can rent ice skates on site.
The most relaxing way to experience the winter landscape in Pongau is on a 2-hour carriage ride high above St. Johann. Snuggled up in warm blankets, you can enjoy the view while fairytale stories, mulled wine and punch create the perfect atmosphere.
We have listed our favorites for you here. All tours are suitable for all skill levels and are completely pre-organized.
This snowshoe hike leads through the forest and across meadows to the Lackenalm area. There you can enjoy the pleasant peace and beautiful view.
Starting point: “Path of good wishes” summer trail no. 32 Berggasthof Sattelbauer – access to Sattelbauer possible with your own car (possibly snow-covered road), if you take a taxi to Sattelbauer, you can rent a toboggan there and whizz down the 3km long toboggan run into the valley.
As soon as the temperatures allow, a meter-thick layer of ice forms on Lake Zell. This is swept and polished to a high shine to provide a perfect ice surface and carefully checked to ensure safety.
You have the option of getting to the Loosbühelalm on foot or with snowshoes along the marked snowshoe hiking trail (suitable for beginners).
You can go downhill on a toboggan (toboggan rental at the hut).
The well-signposted nature trail with its nine stations and information boards starts from the Arthurhaus near the Mahdlift (1,511 m). The trail to the summit of the Hochkeil is well prepared and clearly visible.
Spend some time in the forest without any intention and let the healing effect of this place of power work on you with all your senses. A forest bathing walk around the Jägersee is a good idea. The impressive nature, the combination of lake, mountains and forest invites you to reflect. Give it a try!
The hike to the Meislstein Chapel is not only a hit in summer. Short but intense: In about two hours you hike with a moderate incline from the Vorderploin farm in Goldegg along the road and then over forest and forest paths to the hiking trail towards the Meislstein Chapel. Depending on the snow conditions, this route can pose minor challenges. The reward at the destination is the view of the Hochkönig massif.
Park at the Hypogarage (Uni Salzburg) and walk along the footpath into the old town. Take the path to Nonnberg Abbey, then the “Hoher Weg” alley to the Stieglkeller and look at the beautiful city of Salzburg from above. Then continue into Festungsgasse, past the St. Peter Abbey Bakery to Kapitelplatz. Continue to Domplatz, Residenzplatz, through Goldgasse
and Getreidegasse. Walk back towards Barmherzige Brüder, then back to Unipark Nonntal.
